Geographical location

Agadir is an up-and-coming tourist region in the south of Morocco. The old port city lies on the Atlantic Ocean and has a long sandy beach, where several top-class hotels have been settled on the promenade in recent years.

Once founded by Portuguese sailors the city is now home to some 600,000 inhabitants, although the area does not feel like a typical metropolis. Besides the tourism sector, Agadir’s main sources of income are mining and fishing.

With its extremely mild climate and over 300 sunny days a year, Agadir is also enjoying increasing popularity among European holidaymakers. The region is considered to be very safe and politically stable.

In the high season several tour operators do operate full charters from most European countries directly to Agadir.

Climate in Agadir

Bucht von Agadir (Alexander Mirschel) Copyright
License Information available under 'Proof of Image Sources' Agadir has a dry, mild and very balanced climate all year round. Winter is comparatively warm with daytime temperatures around 18 °C, while at night the temperatures rarely drop below 8 °C. The steady winds from the Atlantic Ocean ensure that Agadir rarely feels too hot even in mid-summer.

There is very little rain in Agadir, the summer months usually have no precipitation at all. The wettest travel season is between November and the end of February, when the temperatures are generally not suitable for a seaside and beach holiday anyway.

The bathing season around Agadir begins at the end of May, when the water temperature slowly climbs towards 20 °C and reaches values of up to 25 °C during the day. The high season is in the summer months of July, August and September, the three warmest months in the region.

When to go to Agadir?

The best time to travel for Agadir basically begins with the rising temperatures in May and ends with the slowly returning humidity towards the end of October. Basically you can consider Agadir a year-round destination without any problems, as it can also be combined wonderfully with other cities in Morocco.

Nevertheless, one should be aware that in the low season bathing in the Atlantic Ocean at 16 °C to 17 °C can be quite chilly and only for the hard-boiled swimmers. High season from the end of June to the beginning of October is therefore perfect for a seaside and beach holiday.

Our recommendation is to look for some great bargains in the shoulder seasons, immediately before and after the European summer holidays, as the weather still shows best conditions but prices are comparatively low.

Highlights and Attractions

Agadir itself is not particularly rich in sights and attractions, yet the city has one or two surprises to offer. The long, modern promenade on the beautiful sandy beach is undoubtedly a gem.

The large souk El Had d’Agadir and the Médina d’Agadir are just as worth a visit as the old fishing port of the city. From the ruins of Oufella you have the best view of Agadir and can enjoy a great panorama.

A few kilometres outside the city boundary lies Taghazout Beach, another pearl that is absolutely popular with surfers. Here you can find some very neat little hotels and B&Bs with a charming atmosphere.

Popular day trips lead to the picturesque Paradise Valley, which looks like a mirage in the middle of the rather barren surroundings as well as the port city of Essaouira (around 2.5 hours drive), which is with good reason described as one of the most beautiful places in all of Africa.

The temperatures started at about 21 degrees and went up to 28 degrees in Agadir. Very pleasant travel time, again and again Agadir!
