Geographical location

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily.

The Italian island has an area of about 15000 square miles and about 1.7 million inhabitants. This results in a population density of 69 inhabitants per square kilometre.

Sardinia is 130 miles from the Italian mainland, capital of the island is Cagliari. The road from Bonifacio separates Sardinia from the French island of Corsica over a width of 7 miles.

Punta La Marmor is the highest mountain on the island at 1834 metres. In the south of the island there are gold, silver and iron deposits. Sardinia is a varied nature reserve and shelter of a diverse flora and fauna.

As the island is also a popular holiday destination, there are increasingly better flight connections in addition to the traditional ferry connections from France and Italy.

Besides Olbia, the most popular holiday resorts are the coastal region Costa Smeralda with the neighbouring Baja Sardinia, the port of Palau, Porto Rotondo and the Costa Rei in southeast Sardinia.

Climate in Sardinia

IMG_9079 (Michele Testini) CC BY-ND The Mediterranean climate manifests itself in annual average temperatures of around 17 °C with up to 300 sunny days and usually pleasantly mild values even in spring and autumn. In the capital Cagliari temperatures already rise to over 20 °C in April, but it is still a little too fresh for longer bathing until mid-May. From June it becomes summerly warm, in July and August sometimes quite hot.

In September the temperatures slowly subside, but the heated Mediterranean still remains pleasantly warm. Slowly the rains are getting a little more, in October and November as well as February it gets wettest on the island. From November to April Sardinia then falls into a kind of hibernation, many hotels and restaurants close, even supermarkets reduce their assortment.

When to visit Sardinia?

The best time to visit Sardinia starts in April for round trips, active holidaymakers (for example hikers and golfers), but most hotels and restaurants are still on a budget. With the rising temperatures in early summer, the picture changes abruptly; Sardinia offers the best price-performance ratio between mid-May and mid-June.

However, we recommend the months of July, August and September as the best time to visit the island, especially for seaside holidaymakers. The temperatures of 27 °C to 30 °C allow you to spend relaxing days under the Italian sun and a holiday to suit the taste of sun-hungry connoisseurs. The Mediterranean is up to 24 °C warm and it hardly rains at all, over 10 hours of sunshine in July and August provide perfect summer weather!

Because of the strong wind it was rather cool. Lying on the beach was only possible in the slipstream.

Thomas, 57 years old was there in September

We were 20 days in September in the southeast of Sardinia, mostly outdoor/camping.
It was pleasant, sometimes hot and 3 nights with rain, thus slightly cooled – average approx. 27 to 31°C, water 21 to 24°C.
    It’s easy to handle.

Weather Rating: 4 stars – Good
