Geographical location

The southern European island state of Malta lies in the Mediterranean Sea south of the Italian island of Sicily and east of the North African mainland.

Due to its area of just 200 square miles, Malta is also known as a dwarf state and in fact its national territory is smaller than the area of the city of Bremen.

About 425,000 inhabitants live on the inhabited islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino. The capital of Malta is the city of Valletta, which despite its compactness offers a wealth of exciting sights and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Malta has an international airport and a popular cruise port. The islands are popular holiday destinations and offer a wide range of possibilities from party holidays to relaxing family holidays.

Climate in Malta

Grand Harbour Three Cities auf Malta (allard1) lizensiertes Stockfoto Geographically, Malta is more southerly than some parts of Tunisia or Morocco. For this reason, the islands have a subtropical to Mediterranean climate.

This is characterized by hot and dry summers with temperatures of up to 32 °C. The months of June to August are very warm and there is almost never rain during this travel season.

The winter months in Malta are mild but quite humid. In December, precipitation can increase to up to 4.49 in. Temperatures do not usually drop below 10 °C even at night.

Various winds provide welcome coolings in Malta in summer and occasional rain showers in the winter months.

When to travel to Malta?

The season on Malta, Gozo and Comino is similar to the travel weather, the islands fill up very quickly with rising temperatures after Easter at the latest. The best time to visit Malta is from mid-May to mid-October. In this time real summer weather prevails, the water temperatures crack the 20 °C mark around the end of May and reach their peak in July and August with around 23 °C.

With up to 12 hours of sunshine, the summer months in Malta are not only friendly but also very long. There are ideal conditions for a beach holiday and also the warm nights are ideal for evenings on the open terraces of the many bars and restaurants. The autumn months of September and October (25 °C to 29 °C) are also ideal for travelling.

Malta is also popular for cruises and individual sailing tours. In the classic winter months of December, January and February you should consider a trip to Malta well. The regular rainfall could present the dream islands in the Mediterranean in the wrong light. From March, the weather will be noticeably more pleasant and is suitable for cultural visits, active holidays and walks.

Highlights and Attractions

The capital Valletta has a unique old town with attractions such as St. John’s Co-Cathedral, Casa Roccoa Piccola and the Waterfront. A popular destination in Valletta are the picturesque Upper Barrakka Gardens above the extensive harbour area, where the Salutting Battery is fired daily at 12 and 16 o’clock.

Valletta is often underestimated and has rightly retained its status as a World Heritage Site due to its special flair, narrow cobblestone streets and charming architecture. Malta has an exciting underwater world and several diving centres. Popular attractions include the fishing village of Marsaxlokk, the historic town of Mdina, the film set city of Popeye Village and a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon between the main island and Comino.

The well-known and often photographed rock formation Azure Window on Gozo was formed several million years ago, but collapsed completely in March 2017 after a storm. We also recommend a trip on a traditional Barklori boat through the impressive Grand Harbour of Malta.

Mid November, weather unfortunately not nice, much rain and rather cold temperatures, nothing with swimsuit and flip-flops

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent

Only one day was cloudy – ideal for a”round trip” in Malta. Not too hot and yet almost always sunshine.

Weather Rating: 4 stars – Good

The weather in Malta in December is mostly good, sun, wind and pleasant 19-20°. There were no rainy days at all, only 2 short showers. Have a nice time, again!

Weather Rating: 4 stars – Good

Raphaela, 62 years old was there in May

I experienced pleasant, Mediterranean weather, just as it was promised for Malta! The temperatures were always between 20-22 degrees – the mostly cloudless blue sky dipped into the blue of the Mediterranean Sea. Simply dreamlike and relaxing!

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent

Jacqueline, 41 years old was there in July

Perfect summer weather, quite hot during the day but a pleasantly dry heat in which you don’t sweat so much. Besides, you deliberately come to Malta in the middle of summer. Pure sunshine. No rain. Great destination!

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent

Marc, 34 years old was there in June

We were at the beginning of April in St. Julian’s on the main island and were very satisfied with the weather. During the day it became very hot, in the evening the thermometer went down to a pleasant 20 degrees. Unfortunately a lot of party-happy Britons in St Julians, but Malta has many more – and admittedly nicer – corners to offer

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent

Lisa, 24 years old was there in April

In the middle of April we had already values of up to 26 degrees and a lot of sun. It was not too hot, but always very pleasant and not only in the Blue Lagoon many visitors were already bathing in the water. For the exploration of Valetta and the other places of interest the ideal travel time!

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent
