Santorini is a small group of islands in the south of the Greek Cyclades. Usually the main island Thira is meant when talking about Santorini.

Santorini is located about 75 miles north of the island of Crete, directly at the foothills of a caldera and is therefore of volcanic origin. This also explains the unique landscape of the islands, whose bays are often covered by black lava beaches and often nestled between spectacular cliffs.

Because of its climate, breathtaking views and luxurious hotels, Santorini is particularly popular with honeymooners and couples in general. This is particularly true of the towns of Fira, Imerovigli and the unique cliff town of Oia at the northern tip of the island.

But Santorini is also very popular with families, the beauty of the landscape inspires young and old. So it is not surprising that Santorini has been nicknamed for centuries: Kallisti – translated: “The most beautiful of all”.

There are also several ferry connections daily (about 7 hours) from Piraeus via Paros, Naxos and Ios to Santorini.

Climate on Santorini

As the southernmost island of the Cyclades, Santorini has the most hours of sunshine in Greece and is at the same time pleasantly temperate. Mild winter months and a long period without precipitation with real summer weather from April to October are therefore waiting.

The transition months in spring and autumn are often pleasantly calm, the island wakes up slowly from a deep sleep and the day temperatures oscillate between 19 °C (April, November) and 23 °C (May, October).

It gets really hot between June and September, whereby July and August are the high season as expected. Rain is an absolute exception throughout the summer, normally there is no significant rainfall between April and September.

When is the best time to visit Santorini?

Santorini can be visited all year round. Between mid-November and mid-March rain showers are not unusual at this time. Nevertheless, the island world still has its special charm during this time and is very suitable for relaxation.

If you want to sunbathe and have fun, you should consider the summer months, as in all regions of the Aegean and the Mediterranean Sea. The best time to visit Santorini is from June to October, with the main tourist season (with correspondingly high prices) mainly in July and August.

If you are not on school holidays, you should consider the transitional period from mid-May to the end of June and from mid-September to mid-October as the travel season. September in particular is an ideal time for honeymooners and is also perfect for cruises.

Sights and Highlights

Anyone who has ever looked at the many postcard motifs from Santorini already suspects that the biggest sight is actually the island itself. Particularly noteworthy is Fira with its great cliffs and the very worth seeing Orthodox cathedral in the centre of the village.

Also the sunset in one of the many restaurants of Oia is one of the highlights on Santorini. Both towns are connected by the picturesque Fira-Oia hiking trail. Our favourite bays are the beautiful Perissa Beach and the beautiful Amoudi Bay.

The archaeological sites of Old Thera between Perissa and Kamari and the ancient Akrotiri are also worth a visit. The romantic sailing trips of the providers Sunset Oia Sailing, Bella Aurora & Thalassa and Santorini Sailing are highly recommended.
