The Greek island of Mykonos belongs to the Cyclades and has been a popular destination since the 1960s. The island is also very popular with homosexuals, is considered to be extremely tolerant and cosmopolitan.
But Mykonos in the South Aegean is much more than a wild party hotspot and offers a wide range of possibilities, which also provide for enthusiasm with families and heterosexual couples.
The capital of the island is Mykonos Chora. The city’s landmark are the five windmills at the city harbour. Mykonos is famous for beautiful beaches like Psarou Beach or Paradise Beach. About 11,000 inhabitants live on an area of 65 square miles.
Mykonos has its own international airport. The island is also connected to the mainland by a ferry. Mykono’s neighboring islands are Naxos in the south, Delos in the west and Tinos in the north.
Climate on Mykonos
The climate on Mykonos is very summery and pleasantly warm, especially in June, July, August and September. Temperatures of over 30 °C make the hearts of many summer holidaymakers beat faster every year. Rainfall is very low between May and September. The water temperature reaches 20 °C around mid-May and settles at around 24 °C between mid-July and the end of September.
In the winter months from October to March temperatures drop to an average of about 12 °C, while precipitation increases. Most rain falls on Mykonos in November, December and February. The water temperatures are also no longer suitable for swimming in winter, which is why many hotels and clubs close outside the main season.
In late spring and early summer (around April and May), nature is in full bloom after the precipitation on the Cyclades. Due to the intense, hot and dry summer, nature usually seems “burnt” from the end of July. Only with the onset of rainfall in mid-October will the plant world on the island be revived very slowly.

When to visit Mykonos?
The main season on Mykonos and the Cyclades (including Santorini, Paros and Naxos) is in July and August. At this time not only the temperatures experience absolute maximum values, but also the visitor numbers and overnight accomodation prices. We generally recommend the entire period from the end of May to the end of September as the best travel season for Mykonos. The months are all dry and sunny, the sea has very pleasant water temperatures.
Those who want to avoid the heat are very well served with the fringe months of June and September. The month of May can already be warm enough, but in some years the weather is not stable enough for a pure beach holiday. From the beginning to the middle of October, the first heavy rainfall usually sets in, but usually very good offers attract at the end of the season.
