Geographical location

Abu Dhabi is the largest of the United Arab Emirates and is best known for its capital also named Abu Dhabi. In fact, the Emirate includes the city of al-Ain and smaller cities such as Madinat Zayed, Ruwais and the Liwa Oasis.

Outside the city boundary, the coastal area is dominated by mangroves and a large desert area. The emirate of Abu Dhabi is home to about 2.4 million people; according to official surveys, expatriats from foreign countries exceed 80% of the population. Abu Dhabi’s city centre is located on an island in the Persian Gulf, but is directly connected to the mainland by three large bridges.

The United Arab Emirates (Arabian Peninsula) border Saudi Arabia to the south and Oman to the east. Besides Abu Dhabi und Dubai also smaller Emirates such as Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Sharjah are getting more popular travel destinations in the region.

Climate in Abu Dhabi

License Information available under 'Proof of Image Sources' The United Arab Emirates are characterised by a tropical climate with hot daytime temperatures of more than 50 °C and a very high humidity during summer months. Further inland, the air is much drier, but temperatures can sometimes rise even higher.

However, similar to Dubai, all shopping malls, sightings and public buildings in Abu Dhabi are cooled by huge air-conditioning systems. Daily temperature values below 30 °C are usually only to be found from mid-December to mid-March, while all other months of the year remain significantly higher and reach their peak around August.

The summer months in Abu Dhabi are so hot that many hotels are offering special discounts and offers during this time of the year. From the beginning of July to the end of August, the temperatures do never drop below 29 °C even at night. There is absolutely no rainy season in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have almost no rainfall throughout the year. The sunshine duration is between 8 hours in winter and 11 hours in summer months.

When to go to Abu Dhabi?

Due to the extreme heat, an Abu Dhabi vacation in midsummer is only recommended for experienced tropical holidaymakers and healthy people. Especially travellers with heart complaints or circulatory disorders should better avoid the months of May to October. Who cannot resist the attractive discount offers in the summer, should consult their family doctor for a checkup and ensure sufficient supply of fluid throughout the day. The travel period from mid-June to early September is therefore referred to as the “hot season”.

The so-called off-peak times and shoulder seaisons, for example at the beginning of May or the end of October, are much more recommendable. However, the best time to visit Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates is in February, March, April, November and December. January is also nice for exploring with daytime temperatures of around 24 °C (around 14 °C at night) and a water temperature of around 22 °C. A nice contrast to the mostly cold, grey winter in Europe and most part of the States!

Julia, 32 years old was there in December

We were in Abu Dhabi + Dubai between the years and enjoyed the travel climate very much. It was pleasantly sunny every day, only in the early morning there was some fog, but at the latest around 10 o’clock it cleared up completely. The day values were in the shade at a mild 24-25 degrees, in the sun 30 degrees were reached. Especially in Abu Dhabi there was a light breeze during our trip, so it never got too hot. All in all a really perfect travel time to escape the winter blues in Germany. Is December / January warm enough for a bath? Basically yes, because the water is usually even warmer than the air. If the wind is not too strong, the temperatures for swimming (in the sea and pool) are even ideal. We liked the stand most on Saadiyat Island, where the new Louvre Abu Dhabi was opened. There is a great public beach and a private beach club (Saadiyat Beach Club), as well as several luxury hotels including St. Regis Abu Dhabi. Simply super!

Weather Rating: 5 stars – Excellent
